Are you brushing correctly? The common mistakes adults still make

Brushing too hard can damage teeth and gums

It's a common misconception that the harder you brush, the cleaner your teeth will be. In reality, brushing too forcefully can wear down your enamel - the protective outer layer of your teeth - and irritate your gums. This can lead to sensitivity, gum recession and even expose the roots of your teeth. Tip: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle circular motions. Think of polishing your teeth rather than scrubbing them.

Two minutes, twice a day - every day

Many people don't brush for as long as they think. Studies show that the average brushing time is just 45 seconds! To effectively remove plaque and food particles, you should brush for a full two minutes, twice a day. Tip: Try setting a timer or use an electric toothbrush with a built-in two-minute timer to make sure you're giving your teeth the attention they deserve.

Don't forget the gumline and back teeth

The front teeth get most of the attention, but plaque tends to build up along the gumline and on the back molars. Neglecting these areas can lead to cavities and gum disease. Tip: Angle your toothbrush at about 45 degrees towards the gums to reach the plaque hiding just beneath the gumline.

Always use fluoride toothpaste

Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens enamel and helps prevent tooth decay. Skipping fluoride toothpaste or rinsing your mouth immediately after brushing can reduce its protective effect. Tip: Spit out excess toothpaste, but don't rinse straight away - this allows the fluoride to continue working for longer.

Replace your toothbrush regularly

Over time, toothbrush bristles become frayed and less effective. A worn brush won't clean properly and can even harbour bacteria. Tip: Replace your toothbrush (or electric toothbrush head) every three months, or sooner if the bristles look worn.

A healthier smile starts with the right technique

Even with perfect brushing, some areas of your mouth can be difficult to reach without professional care. Regular dental check-ups with our dentists and hygiene appointments ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy year-round.
