Mouthguards Explained: What Parents Need to Know

With summer sports season just around the corner, it's the perfect time to check that your child's teeth are ready for action. Whether it's football, hockey, rugby or gymnastics, impacts and collisions can happen in any sport, and a simple mouthguard can make a huge difference in protecting their smile.

At Church Road Dental Care Centre, we're happy to advise your family on suitable mouthguards for children and provide a custom-fitted mouthguard to see them through the season. Just book an appointment and we'll take care of the rest.

Sports mouthguards: are your kids properly protected?

Why mouthguards matter

Children's teeth are still developing, and injuries to teeth, gums, or even jaws can have long-term consequences. Our Teddington dentists explain that a mouthguard acts as a cushion, absorbing shocks and reducing the risk of chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth. Beyond dental protection, mouthguards can also help prevent soft tissue injuries like cuts to the lips, cheeks, or tongue.

Types of mouthguards

There are several options available, each with different levels of protection:

  • Stock Mouthguards: Pre-formed and ready to wear. Affordable, but may not fit perfectly, affecting comfort and speech.
  • Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: Moulded at home using hot water and can be difficult to get a good fit. Suitable for many sports.
  • Custom-Fitted Mouthguards: Made by our Teddington dentists to fit your child's teeth precisely. Provides the best protection, comfort and performance.

Our Church Road dentists recommend custom-fitted mouthguards for active children, especially in contact sports or for those who wear braces.

Getting the most from your mouthguard

  • Make sure it fits snugly and comfortably.
  • Encourage your child to wear it at every practice and game.
  • Clean it regularly with cool water and mild soap — never hot water, which can distort it.
  • Replace it if it becomes worn, cracked or loose.

If your child is involved in a collision that causes tooth damage, call us right away on 0208 977 3746 and talk to our team.
