Our Teddington Dentists Explain What Your Tongue Says About Your Health

When you think about oral health, you probably focus on your teeth and gums, but your tongue can reveal just as much about your overall wellbeing. At Church Road Dental Care Centre in Teddington, we often remind patients that the tongue is a valuable window into general health.
Below, our dentist Ben Griffith shares what you should look out for when examining your tongue and why booking routine dental check-ups can help identify any issues more quickly.

What your tongue can tell you about your health
A healthy tongue
Our dentist Ben Griffith explains that a healthy tongue is typically pink, moist and covered in small nodules called papillae. It shouldn't be painful, swollen or heavily coated. Changes in colour, texture or sensation can sometimes signal an underlying issue.
Common changes to look out for
White coating or patches
A thick white coating may be linked to poor oral hygiene, dehydration or oral thrush (a fungal infection). Persistent white patches should always be assessed by our Teddington dentists.
Red or “beefy” appearance
A very red tongue can sometimes indicate a vitamin deficiency, particularly B12 or iron. It may also accompany certain infections.
Sores or ulcers
Ben assures us that occasional mouth ulcers are common, often triggered by stress or minor trauma. However, any ulcer that lasts more than two weeks should be checked by our team at Church Road Dental.
A sore or burning sensation
This may be linked to dry mouth, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies or irritation from dental appliances.
Changes in texture
A ‘hairy' or unusually smooth tongue can also indicate changes in oral health or hygiene habits. Call us on 0208 977 3746 to talk to our team.
Why tongue health matters
Your mouth is closely connected to the rest of your body. In some cases, systemic conditions such as diabetes, anaemia or immune disorders can first present with changes inside the mouth. Regular dental examinations at Church Road Dental Care Centre allow us to identify unusual signs early and guide you toward appropriate care if needed.
Maintaining good oral hygiene such as brushing twice daily, cleaning between teeth, gently brushing your tongue and attending routine check-ups, helps keep both your mouth and body healthy. If you've noticed changes in your tongue or it's time for your routine review, don't ignore the signs.
