Our Teddington Dentists’ Guide to Gum Disease

Gum disease is one of the most common oral health conditions seen at Church Road Dental Care Centre, yet many people don't realise they have it until it has progressed. The good news is that, when detected early, gum disease can often be managed successfully, helping to protect both your smile and your overall oral health.
In this article, our dentist Dr Ben Griffith helps us understand gum disease and how to prevent it. If you recognise any of the warning signs below, or need further advice from our Teddington dentists, don't hesitate to contact us.

Understanding gum disease: warning signs and early prevention
What is gum disease?
Our dentist Ben explains that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is caused by a build-up of plaque - a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth every day. If plaque isn't removed through regular brushing, flossing and professional cleaning, it can irritate the gums and lead to inflammation.
The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. At this point, treatment from our Church Road dentists is usually straightforward and the condition is often reversible with good oral hygiene and professional care.
If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, a more serious condition that can damage the gums, as well as supporting bone and tissues around the teeth. In severe cases, it can even lead to tooth loss.
Warning signs to look out for
Many people experience few symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular dental check-ups are so important.
However, common signs of gum disease include:
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Receding gums
- Loose or shifting teeth
- A bad taste in your mouth
If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to seek advice from our Teddington dentists as soon as possible. Call Church Road Dental Centre on 0208 977 3746.
How can you prevent gum disease?
The best way to reduce your risk of gum disease is through good preventive care.
Simple steps include:
- Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Cleaning between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes.
- Attending regular dental examinations and hygienist appointments.
- Avoiding smoking, which significantly increases the risk of gum disease.
- Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.
Routine visits allow our Teddington dentists and hygienists to detect early signs of gum disease before they become more difficult to treat.
